Outstanding wines that just keep on going

The perfect way to end a packed day of skiing is sitting in front of a crackling fire with a glass of Austrian wine in your hand. This would ideally be an outstanding wine, perhaps one from a single vineyard (Ried). The finest Austrian wines have true stamina and don’t reveal their full potential until they’ve spent several years maturing in the bottle. The following vintages are currently achieving their personal bests: 2019 (a once-in-a-century vintage!), 2015, 2013 and 2011.

First place on the podium goes to Riedenwein (single-vineyard wines)

First place on the podium goes to Riedenwein (single-vineyard wines)

Austria’s ski resorts also serve very special wines from the country’s wine cellars. Why not take the opportunity to discover the champions from Austrian vineyards?

A lot of Austrian wines are peak performers, representing their region of origin at a very high level. Riedenwein (single-vineyard wines) contend for first place on the podium. These wines are generally powerful, multifaceted wines with good cellaring potential. In most cases, they only reach their peak maturity after a few years in the cellar. Many of the well-known single vineyards in Austria’s wine-growing regions produce individual Riedenwein with a lot of character. If you see the designation “Ried” included in the name of the wine on the label or on the wine list, then you can look forward to an outstanding Austrian wine.

Full-bodied red wines have plenty of personality, whether as a monovarietal Riedenwein (single-vineyard wine) or as a cuvée blend. The typically Austrian grape varieties like Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent really stand out here. Ask your sommelier for well-matured classic wines from Burgenland or Carnuntum and he’ll bring out wines from the cellar that will make the memories of your holiday in Austria last a lifetime.

The stars of Austria’s white wine culture are also deserving of accolades. At the pinnacle, we have the Reserve wines or Riedenwein made from Grüner Veltliner or Riesling from the wine-growing regions along the Danube in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). Styrian Sauvignon Blanc regularly comes out on top in competitions to find the world’s best wines of this type. Connoisseurs who are looking for insider tips should order wines that are adept at holding their own, such as a powerful Zierfandler or Rotgipfler, or a complex Pinot Blanc or Chardonnay.

Where does the Austrian wine in my glass come from? Austrianvineyards.com now provides the answer to this question – with unprecedented simplicity and precision. Just type in the designation of origin or the Ried of your wine, and you’ll find all the information you’re looking for!
