Wagram: Aromatic Where Grüner Veltliner is Mad about Loess.
Two completely different areas comprise the 2,800 hectares of vineyards of the wine-growing area Wagram, situated in the Danube valley. The Wagram, an important plateau in the landscape - and visible from afar - is situated north of the Danube river to the east of Krems, and runs alongside a part of the Danube´s banks. Just outside of Vienna, south of the Danube, Austrian wine-growing tradition shows off its best in Klosterneuburg.
Geologically and climatically, the Wagram offers the best conditions for making rich and aromatic wines. Here, terroir plays a textbook role. A deep layer of loess, created by Aeolian winds on the edges of the retreating 
prehistoric sea, is typical of the landscape, and lends real character to the wines. Mainly Grüner Veltliner ripens here to become a hearty, spicy wine that combines substance and pure pleasure. The autochthonous speciality, Roter Veltliner, emphasises the uniqueness of the area and its pristine natural resources. However, at the leading wine estates of the region, there are also rich red wines - especially those made from the Blauer Zweigelt and Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) varieties. And sweet wines are well represented by ice wine (Eiswein) originating from the ecology-minded village of Großriedenthal.
The confidence and determination of the successful wine-growers influences the entire Wagram area - boosting motivation to increase quality even further, and on a larger scale. Of course, this is supported by tourism and gastronomy, which have come to enjoy an equally high status. The dedicated restaurants and Heurigen in villages such as Feuersbrunn, Fels, Kirchberg and Großriedenthal are certainly no longer insider tips.
Klosterneuburg: Wine. Culture. Pure Pleasure.
Austria's largest private wine estate, Stift Klosterneuburg, has contributed significantly to writing the country’s wine history. Supported by technology and modern management, it will continue to shine as an example estate. Another role model is the "Bundeslehranstalt für Wein- und Obstbau", the world´s first viticulture school, and which is teaching wine knowledge on an international level – today, to the next generation. Additionally, the wine town of Klosterneuburg is home to small family Heurigen as well as major producers of sparkling wines - all of this in the immediate vicinity of the Austrian capital, Vienna.
