At the foot of the Leithagebirge, west of the Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl), is the Neusielersee-Hügelland, home to Austria´s winegrowing all-rounders. With 4,150 hectares of vineyards, no other wine-growing area features such a variety of wines. And one of them - the renowned sweet Ruster Ausbruch – not only reflects a strong regional identity, but also is heralded around the world. In the Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, young wine-growers – both men and women – combine innovative thinking with respect for long-held traditions.
The dry wines bear the stamp of the minerally soils on the slopes of the Leithagebirge mountains, where islands of granite break through the layers of limestone.
The special region-typical wines are marketed under the "Leithaberg dac" designation. The legally-defined production area of Leithaberg dac comprises the political district of Eisenstadt and its surroundings, the Freistadt (free town) Eisenstadt and the political municipalities of Jois and Winden. The white Leithaberg dac may be produced from the varieties Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, Neuburger or Grüner Veltliner. Cuvées (blends) of these varieties are permitted. The red "Leithaberg" is from the Blaufränkisch variety, which can be blended with a maximum of 15% Zweigelt, St.Laurent and / or Pinot Noir. Leithaberg dac wines always reflect minerality and are relatively powerful in character (alcohol on the label:12.5%,13% or 13.5%).
In the area to the west of the Neusiedlersee, a wide range of other varieties is cultivated, with most of these marketed under the designation of "Burgenland".
The region with so many talent- and quality-driven wineries is also a mecca for wine tourists. Cultural programmes – which include wine as well – are offered, for example, in the state capitol, Eisenstadt, with its famous Esterhazy Castle; in the town of Mörbisch, with its renowned lake festival; with the music festivals in the Roman quarry at Sankt Margarethen, and through the Wine Academy in Rust.
