Highest-Ever Export Values Reached with High Value Bottled Wines.
For Austrian Wine, 2007 appears to be the most successful export year ever. At the end of December, it was estimated that total exports for 2007 would be at 51 million litres with a value of € 93 million. Now, the actual figures are much higher: according to Statistik Austria, total exports for 2007 were 56 million litres with a sensational total value of more than €105 million.

The domestic wine-growing policy made important gains on the EU level, and was able to secure an additional € 20 Million from the EU coffers for quality improvement measures.

Through an ordinance adopted on December 10th by Austria’s Minister of Agriculture and the Environment, Josef Pröll, quality wines produced with either the Grüner Veltliner or Riesling grape varieties in the Kremstal wine-growing area can, for the first time, be marketed under the designation Kremstal dac. The new designation takes effect with wines from the 2007 vintage.

The sweet wine pioneer has died at the age of 48, following a brief,
heavy illness. The Austrian wine community is mourning one of its greatest pioneers. Alois Kracher died early in the morning of December 5th from complications due to cancer. His death came unexpectedly to many in the wine community. With Alois Kracher's passing, Austria has lost an irreplaceable visionary, not only because his wines achieved so much international success, but also because of his dedication and service to Austrian wines around the world.

The harvest was, for the most part, complete by the end of October. In fact, a major portion of the grapes were already picked by the middle of that month. In some regions, though, top quality grapes to be used for Prädikatswein remain on the vines. Overall, the high quality of the grapes has proven ideal, revealing at full ripeness moderate sugar levels and good acidity structure..
