Riesling from the Kamptal and Burgenland red wines capture “International Trophies”.

Sensational Success for Austria at the "Decanter World Wine Awards" in London

(AWMB, October 2005) - At the World Wine Awards in London, the leading international wine magazine, Decanter, has awarded for the second time its trophies to prominent wineries. Austrian winemakers have proven very successful indeed!

After just two years of existence, the "Decanter World Wine Awards" are already amongst the most important awards in the international wine world. During this year’s competition, which comprised approximately 30 categories and four quality levels - Gold, Silver, Bronze and Commended - more than 5, 500 wines were evaluated through blind tastings. Also, from the Gold medal winners in each category, the international wine jury determined - through a second tasting - "Regional Trophy Wine" winners according to category and country. Here, Austria was a hit with wines from the Wachau and Kamptal regions as well as two wines from Burgenland.

All winners from the 30 categories were also nominated for the “International Trophies” selection; here, the best wines from the different countries were tasted and a "Best of the Best" champion was named. Austrian producers were once again a major success, capturing the "International Riesling Trophy" and "International Trophy for Regional Red Wine Blends".

These honors are yet another addition to the continuing list of international successes for Austria’s winemakers - strengthening further the outstanding image and global acceptance of Austrian quality wine.
