Austrian Wine: Top of the World

(AWMB/September 2005) - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate” is recognized as the most important and influential wine publication in the world. In his current online edition 260 Austrian wines from the current vintage are assessed. The results: outstanding!

Wine guru Robert Parker

Many international wine trends begin in the USA. The consumer magazine "Wine Spectator" and Robert Parker’s “The Wine Advocate” are undeniably the leading wine publications. David Schildknecht, renowned in the branch as a profound expert on Austrian wines, has recently joined the Wine Advocate team and is responsible for the assessment of Austrian wines. Wines are scored according to the 100-point scale with wines achieving more than 90 points being “Outstanding wines with exceptional complexity and character”.

Over 80 Austrian wines rated “outstanding”

260 wines from Austria were tasted with over 80 wines reaching a score of 90 points or more. Dry white varietals from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling along with noble sweet wines from around Lake Neusiedl were at the fore. White varietals from Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Austrian red wines also received high scores. The high assessment of Austrian wines in the Wine Advocate is extremely advantageous for the country’s image on a global scale. Enthused about the success of Austrian vintners, Michael Thuner, director of the Austrian Wine Marketing (AWM) states, “It can be assumed that the demand for Austrian wines not only in the USA, but also in Europe and Asia, will further increase.”
