Quantity Normal, Top Qualities Possible

Wine Harvest 2002: Good Weather Gives Hope

(AWMB, October, 2002) - Research carried out by Statistik Austria suggests that the wine harvest 2002 will be around 2.5 m hectoliters, a quantity similar to 2001, though an additional one percent may be expected throughout the country. Hail and floods have had only very localized effects on predicted harvests.

Conditions for an outstanding vintage were ideal until early September, with a clearly advanced ripening of the grape material. Rain and cold spells in early autumn caused some uncertainty. Now a solid high pressure area over central Europe is making winemakers hopeful. “As far as the quality is concerned, the harvest may be good or exceptional,” says the Managing Director of the Austrian Wine Marketing, Michael Thurner, “Every sunny October day will improve the result.”
