(AWM - June 2002) - The ceremonial hall of the
Vienna City Hall was the backdrop for honoring Austria's 200 chosen
SALON wines during a presentation to professionals. This annual
showcasing of the best of Austrian wines culminated in the naming
of 11 SALON members and the 11 SALON winners. Celebrity patrons
awarded the certificates.
The Way Up
Austria's annual SALON unites a definitive selection of the country's
200 best wines. Getting a wine into the SALON is seen as an important
career step for young producers as it offers publicity and recognition
for outstanding wines, chosen by professionals during a series of
blind tastings. Up-and-coming winemakers are given the opportunity
to present themselves and their products, and winning the SALON
is equivalent to being awarded a national prize. A wine being recognized
by admission to the SALON has satisfied not only the criteria of
the Federal quality controls, but has also come through tastings
at a local, regional, and national level. At the same time as the
chosen wines, eleven outstanding individuals from the wine world,
sommeliers and journalists, are also honoured.
200 Wines on Tour
All 200 SALON wines will take part in the SALON tour around the
country. For two weeks this enormous wine roadshow will be presented
in different Austrian cities. Michael Thurner, the Director of the
Austrian Wine Marketing Board, understands this as a service for
consumers: "the enthusiasm of Austrian wine lovers was an enormous
help for our wine producers and dealers. The SALON tour is an opportunity
of saying thank you to the customers and of keeping them up to date
with the newest developments. If you go to every SALON you really
know what's going on!"
