Some Producers Sustain Severe Damage

Floods: Austria's Wine Harvest not in Danger

(AWMB/TK, 2002-08-19) Especially in wine growing regions of Kamptal, Kremstal and Wachau, the floods caused significant damage to some producers. The effects on the overall quality and quantity of the 2002 vintage, however, are not expected to be significant.

Damage to buildings has been reported from the Wachau, the Kremstal and the Kamptal. Additionally, several hectares of low-lying vineyards are flooded in all three regions. The reconstruction of destabilized and partly collapsed stone terraces will also require great investments of time and work. The floods also entered several cellars and destroyed valuable equipment.
