ASI-Sommelier World Championship 1998 in Vienna
Goals of the Sommelier World Championship
The
Sommelier World championship is an international competition, organized
by the "Association de la Sommellerie Internationale" (ASI).
The event is staged every three years in another member country of the
ASI. In 1995 the Sommelier World Championship took place in Tokyo under
immense media participation.
The competition is contributing primarily to the increased development
of the occupation and to a better understanding of the function of the
sommelier. Information about wine-growing products all over the world
is communicated to create public interest for them.
Beyond that, the event serves as a contact network among sommeliers.
The focal points are the gastronomic and drink culture of the host country,
which can also favourably present its entire cultural identity.
