"1997 Asparagus Wine" Presentation

(AWM, April 1997) - On the occasion of the festive opening of the asparagus season at the Hotel am Sachsengang on April 24, 1997, the AWM, under the patronage of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, will bestow the "Prädikat Asparagus Wine Award" upon 33 quality Austrian wines.

A jury of 20 representatives from the wine trade, the press, the Marchfeld asparagus farmers and distinguished gastronomy had the task of choosing those wines in a blindfold tasting which best accommodated the asparagus dishes as offered.

Some interesting results: practically half of the chosen wines were Pinot blancs. This grape variety seemed a relatively safe tip as an accompaniment to asparagus. Next to the Pinot blanc varieties, however, the Grüne Veltliner and Sauvignons were also deemed appropriate.

It was gratifying that award-winning wines from ten wine-growing areas were represented, and that among the winners were some lesser known names.

The sources of supply for 186 quality wines taking part in the tasting were sent to domestic gastronomic addresses by the AWM. Additionally, are the asparagus-wine place cards and a menu example to the theme of asparagus and wine.

Wine and asparagus form one of the culinary high points in the course of the year. The Prädikat asparagus wine makes easy the choice of wine for asparagus fans, gives gastronomy and the producers an additional sales argument and should generally increase sensitivity for enjoyable possibilities in the wine spring.
