Austrian Wine Storm the Peak in the USA

(AWM, October 1996) - The "Wine Enthusiast", a respected magazine for specialists which is widely distributed throughout the USA, annually offers a worthy podium for international tastings in a grand style, with 4400 samples submitted from all over the world.

Under the title "The Wines of Austria - a Revelation" Austria was presented in the October issue as a wine-growing country of the highest class. Of the 85 Austrian wines submitted, a quarter of them won points which placed them among the absolute leaders (90-100 points).

In comparison: the results of the products from Germany, Chile and the South of France were published in the same issue of the magazine. Our German neighbors had a similar number of highly-rated products, with 140 samples submitted, however. Chile achieved the 90 point mark only twice with good cost effectiveness, and red wine from the South of France only once.

The Austrians were again convincing with their high-ranking offer of sweet wines and were able to impress mightily on this occasion in the area of dry white wines, and indicate further the great quality of their red wines.

Top scores:
Sweet Wines:

Helmut Lang: Chardonnay Barrique Ausbruch 1992 (98/100)
Feiler-Artinger: Ruster Ausbruch Pinot Cuvée 1993 (97/100)
Kracher Alois: Nouvelle Vague Chardonnnay-Welschriesling Beerenauslese 1993 (96/100)

Dry white wines:
Mantlerhof: Grüner Veltliner 1986 (96/100)

Red wines:
Juris-Stiegelmar: St. Laurent 1993 (92/100)

With great expectation one now awaits to see if one or the other will be strongly represented in the Top 100 World Ratings published by the Tasting Commission at the end of the year.
