Special trophies
for Austrian wines for the first time
Austrian Vintners
win awards in London
(AWM, September
1996) - Three Austrian vintners were given special awards at the gala
event of the "International Wine Magazine" at the Hilton Hotel
in London. In the presence of the EU Commissioner Fischler, the following
Burgenland wine-growing estates were honored:

With two gold
medals Gerhard Nekowitsch/Illmitz was the most successful
Austrian vintner in the "Wine Challenge", for the "Schilfwein
Tradition 1994" and the "DESSERT WINE TROPHY" for
the best sweet wine of the year.

Due to the
high quality of the Austrian wines submitted, an "AUSTRIAN
RED TROPHY" was awarded for the first time to the already highly-decorated
Juris Estate belonging to the Stieglmar Family from
Gols.

Willi Opitz/Illmitz was designated "LATE HARVEST WINEMAKER
OF THE YEAR" - he not only impressed with his magnificent wines
but also with his CD "The Sound of Wine".

The AWM congratulates
the award-winning vintners and honors their performances as important
contributions in making the exquisite culture of Austrian wines known
throughout the world.
