On each of our adventure tours, we take you behind stage for a candid interview with a young professional working in the Austrian wine industry:
Wolfgang Lux is sales manager for Vienna’s internationally successful Wieninger Estate. After graduating the Tourism College in Krems in 1996, he worked in hotels and restaurants all over Austria and in Switzerland for several years. After a short break from wine which was spent in Holland working for Daimler-Chrysler he returned to Vienna and happened to meet Berthold Salomon. From 2003 till 2005 he worked at the Salomon-Undhof Winery in Krems responsible for marketing and sales.
What is the most exciting thing about the Austrian wine branch?
There is no other wine region that is as small as Austria and yet makes such a great impact. It is easy for people to get excited about such a broad variety of unique wines, when on a global level other wines are beginning to taste more and more the same.
What to you love most about Vienna?
Besides the beautiful women? Well, living in a vivacious metropolis that is the world’s only capital city with substantial vineyards and significant wine production is pretty cool.
What do you enjoy most in your work?
Other than drinking – oops – I mean tasting wines, I get the chance to meet a lot of interesting people from all over the world and I learn something new daily.
If you had to take one wine to each of following, what would it be and why?
A Rendezvous?
As standard equipment in my car I naturally have an emergency triangle, but I also have wine glasses, a blanket, and knowledge of an idyllic spot in the vineyards overlooking Vienna. I'd be sure to pack a bottle of Blaufränkisch from southern Burgenland, just to show that I am broad-minded and because of its terroir and animal magnetism.
Dinner with very good friends?
Definitely a Riesling. Not a super intellectual one from the Wachau, but a very approachable and clearly structured Riesling from Kremstal.
An isolated desert island?
As a pragmatic optimist, I'd assume there was a refrigerator and take a bottle of light and aromatic Wieninger Blend. I'd hate to suffer from thirst without a drop of home in sight.
