On every adventure tour we take you behind stage for a candid interview with a young professional working in the Austrian wine industry
After finishing his enology studies in Austria, Franz gained experience in California and Australia before stepping into the family winery in Mittelburgenland. The Weninger family has taken their Austrian winemaking expertise to Hungary; where they also have two new ventures.
What is the most exciting thing about the Austrian wine branch?
It is the beginning of a revolutionary new dawn for a long tradition.
What to you love most about your wine region?
I love the quiet, gentle landscape with its soft hills and warm colors. The horizon is broad, but it still feels cozy and "gemütlich".
What do you enjoy most in your work?
I really enjoy the creative independence and being able to determine my own future with the secure support of my father.
If you had to take one wine to each of following, what would it be and why?
A Rendezvous?
I'd take a Trockenbeerenauslese that is high in alcohol just to get the mood in swing, but the real reason is that it will sweeten our lips!
Dinner with very good friends?
I'd take a mature Blaufränkisch, something like Ernst Triebaumer's legendary wine from the Mariental vineyard. Then we would be motivated not just to reminisce the great things we have done in the past, but what we will also do in the future.
An isolated desert island?
I would want to have my father's best wine with me, so I could savor the memories of home.
